The Thinking Hats
The Thinking Hats was inspired by the Famous Five who fought so hard for women across Canada to be recognized as persons. By persevering, they forced recognition of the equality of women in freedoms and rights. Before their victory, women in what was then the Dominion of Canada were equal to men only in matters of pain and penalties.
The hats are also symbolic of the era and can be interpreted from many perspectives. They were status symbols, sometimes a moral obligation and for many an opportunity to express their individuality. When we think back to the past we remember how women often donned a hat before going off to an important meeting. Were these the “Thinking hats” (caps) that we were told to put on whenever we had a challenge or problem to solve?
